WARNING .!.!.! Do not attempt to do what Bear Grylls has done in this video or you will be in extreme danger...........of looking silly. Sure...hopping, prancing, crouching, and taking flying leaps around fake lava surrounded by lots of smoke may seem exciting, but sooner or later somebody is going to point out that burning charcoal in old lava cracks does not look at all like real lava. The glow is much different and lava does not produce smoke unless it is burning something combustible, like vegetation. Volcanic fumes may be present over a lava tube, but the area where he was jumping around is not over a tube. Second, shoes will not burn spontaneously while walking on crusted lava without the aid of lighter fluid and a match. Even dry wood will lay there for days without burning. Third, lava crust is incredibly strong and tapping on it gingerly with your foot accomplishes absolutely nothing and will only increase the time to get across and get your feet hotter. And fourth, new crusted lava with liquid lava just underneath the surface is silvery in appearance; lava gets darker in appearance as it cools.

Well, so much for giving solid advice if you ever find yourself in a similar "situation." As usual, Bear Grylls saw a hazard that does not exist and came up with a Hollywood solution complete with sound effects and smoke generators to keep us safe. Soot smudges and flaming boots were a nice touch. There were about 40 different camera angles in 90 seconds, none of which show actual lava.

There is really no compelling reason to cross an active lava flow. Most of the surface flows in Kilauea are limited in size and one can go around them either at the uphill end where it is breaking out from the tube or downhill at the leading edge of the front. Lava flows attract tour choppers like moths to a flame (just listen to some of my other videos). If there is a surface flow, there will definitely be tour choppers overhead and probably other hikers nearby. And since Bear was trying to get to the ocean, why not just follow along the flow downhill and get help from the hundreds of tourists already there?

Depending on the circumstances, one can also cross a flow if the surface has crusted, the other cool side is visible and not too far, and the air temperature and radiant heat above the ground is bearable. It is the extreme radiant heat from the surface, often compared to a blast furnace, that keeps people at a safe distance. Obviously Bear was not concerned about the radiant heat because there wasn't any. He was even doing the famous Bear crouch and getting his face and upper body closer to a surface which can be above 1000 degrees Fahrenheit. One should also take deliberate steps and not flying leaps into possibly unstable surfaces as this is one place where injuries should be avoided at all costs.
